Islington Council held a long-term ambition to reconnect Archway town centre by removing the gyratory to unlock urban realm and regeneration potential through improved access and conditions for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users.
Over the course of 2011-2016, Steer developed a series of feasibility design options that sought to improve this complex intersection. The options were then tested using VISSIM to understand the impacts on all users before the models were submitted and approved by Transport for London (TfL) using the Model Audit Process (MAP).
Subsequent work included the provision of cost estimates and identification of quantified benefits which were used to complete a TfL Major Scheme Business Case.
The project involved extensive stakeholder engagement and we worked collaboratively with the client team to find a solution that met the study objectives.
Successes and outcomes
Islington Council and TfL successfully consulted on their preferred option and following a 15-month build programme, the scheme was successfully switched to two-way working in December 2016.
The scheme was well-received. It was selected as the cover image for the Mayor’s Transport Strategy (Draft) and was recently shortlisted for Excellence in Walking & Cycling at the London Transport Awards 2018.
